We live in a generous place. We see it every day. Neighbors shovel for neighbors. Strangers open doors. When there's a need in the community, community members meet it.
This generousity and concern for one another is embodied by Giving Hearts Day. Now in its 11th year, this 24-hour online giving event demonstrates just how much we care.
You can show your support for The Village Family Service Center on Feb. 8. Big Brothers Big Sisters and First Step Recovery, two programs of The Village, are both taking part in Giving Hearts Day this year! Simply go to www.givingheartsday.org and search for "The Village" to make your online gift to one or both programs.
Big Brothers Big Sisters matches at-risk youth with caring adult volunteers to form long-lasting mentor relationships. Data show these matches improve the child's self-confidence, academic performance, relationships with peers and family members, and so much more. What may seem like little things in the beginning – weekly lunch dates or afternoons spent playing catch – add up to ensure each young person has a chance to reach his or her full potential. (Check out Karl and Ervin's story to see one match in action.)
First Step Recovery offers treatment for individuals struggling with drug and alcohol dependency, as well as support for their family members. There are countless stories of addiction. The licensed addiction counselors and registered nurses at First Step work to make these stories count. Consider what one former patient said (you can watch more here):
"The day I entered First Step Recovery was the day my life changed completely. I was able to breathe again. My life was falling apart. My marriage was on the rocks. My parenting skills weren't what they should be. And I was making choices that were against everything that I stood for. And First Step Recovery saved me. My story counts thanks to First Step Recovery."
Every giving heart counts. Can we count on you this year?
