Sometimes people know they need help, but they're apprehensive. They don't know what a counseling session is like, and that unfamiliarity can be scary. Will I have to lie on a couch? (No.) Are you going to make me do something I don't want to? (No.) If I start counseling, does it mean I'm going to need to see a counselor forever? (No.) Can counseling actually help? (Yes.)
John Lyon, a therapist at The Village's Fargo office, shared what a counseling session is like in this video. In some cases, he says, the counselor serves as a sounding board. Other times, he or she may share advice or teach the client new skills or tools. It's the client who decides what he or she will get out of a counseling session, John says.
