Nokomis Child Care Centers (Fargo, N.D.) doesn't just offer daycare -- Nokomis creates a learning center that is ideal for early childhood education. Age-specific classrooms and play spaces encourage exploration, investigation, problem solving, and discovery. Nokomis classrooms are staffed by teachers trained in early childhood education or a related field. The teachers plan daily activities geared to meet the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social needs of the children. Each child receives a developmental assessment twice per year. With the assessment results, Nokomis teachers are able to tailor the learning environment to best meet the needs of each child enrolled at Nokomis.
Researchers have found that children who attend high-quality early childhood programs, like Nokomis, gain skills normally associated with greater brain development, such as problem solving and language, math, and literacy skills. They also gain other kinds of competencies such as self-control, a higher motivation for learning and social skills.
Our goal is to provide a healthy and well-rounded environment for the kids at our daycare. A children’s mental health consultant from The Village's Family Service Center visits Nokomis each week to observe the classrooms and assist the teachers in identifying and addressing concerns. She is also available to meet with families one-on-one if they have any questions about their child’s behavior, development, or any other needs or concerns.
The South East Education Cooperative (SEEC) partners with Nokomis in a Pre-K Reading Corps Program. An AmeriCorps member is placed in each of our centers to help implement the literacy tutoring model.
