What is Family Therapy? Counselor Sarah Flaten Explains

Sarah Flaten is a counselor with The Village's Alexandria office.

When families struggle, family therapy can get them talking again. Sarah Flaten, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who works at The Village's Alexandria office, says facilitating conversation is a big part of family therapy.

The Village offers family therapy in several locations. It can be extremely helpful, especially during a time of transition, loss or following trauma.

Sometimes the whole family will all meet together, Sarah says. She may meet just with the child to get his or her perspective. She may talk with just the parents to discuss parenting strategies. "I want to empower the parents to be parents," Flaten says.

Seeing them have that "lightbulb moment" and their confidence as parents grow, and helping the parent and child to talk in new ways, is rewarding for Sarah.

"I love seeing that progress and that change and that growth," she says.
